Words & Music: Benny Mann
Fall 1999
Have you seen the ghosts roaming the land?
Hearts and heads nestled in their hands
Spirits rent by razored lies from above
Have you seen the glazed look their eyes?
Sell by dates on souls gone by
Hope curdled by promises left in the sun
Tripped and blinded without a plan
Withered desire to make a stand
Against worth-rapists and snipers of joy
And you with gall ask me time and again
To feel their pain in my heart if I can
Well I can’t, I won’t eat excuses no more
In the end, not all are done in, by their devious nature
Most are lost to weak character
The answer lies within, do what we can, with our future
We got to face down weak character
Scandal, war, sex, kids shooting others
Capital squeezed from tears of mothers
Raise the ratings, get the money, rule the day
Vote to get Punch and Judy in power
Treat your kids like a sack of flour
Head in the couch searching for the TV remote
While one percent burps and laughs
Poor white and brown kids fighting for scraps
Race a wedge keep the slaves in their hold
Want to stand up, think you’re ready to lead
Then brothers and sisters be willing to bleed
You’ll be beat maybe broken for the views you impart
I know it’s hard to be heard over the rest
Deaf stupid silence suits our people the best
Minds and eyes closed for a hundred years
We’ve all fattened up on bullshit and beer
Now we’re too drunk and stupid to harbor a care
Against the grinning butcher knife on the wall
Clock strikes twelve, you ask for great leaders
Well they’re all gobbled up by the top bottom feeders
Sucked up with hope, honesty, and pride.
So you ask me to feel your pain in if I can?
Look in your own heart, start making a stand
Run up your flag, make some noise, right now
